Oi Jean Chin passed away unexpectedly on November 6, 2024 surrounded by family.
Born in Canton in 1924 to Gim Toy and Bong Louie, married Wing Foo Chin in 1947. She came to the United States with daughter Lila in 1953 to join Wing, who had arrived in the U.S. several years earlier. As a young family, they bought a new house on Beacon Hill where they raised 7 children.
Oi Jean was smart, quick and resourceful despite receiving little formal education. While raising their young family, she initially worked as a seamstress, then at the family grocery store. Oi Jean attended classes to learn English and passed her citizenship exam. She also obtained her driver’s license, which was quite an accomplishment for Asian women during that time. She is admired for the enormous role she played in raising their children; guiding them to value hard work and family bonds.
With resolve she submitted immigration petitions for her mother and brother and many others to come to the U.S. In 1976, she was reunited with her mother whom she had not seen for over 23 years. A few years later she was reunited with her brother, Moon Ball Louie.
She enjoyed cooking traditional Cantonese food especially for the Chinese holidays. Oi Jean prepared deng for the dragon boat festival and made herbal Chinese soups. She was busy babysitting her grandchildren, gardening, and was an avid sports fan. She also enjoyed watching football and was a true Seahawks fanatic. She will always be loved and dearly missed.
Oi Jean survived by 7 children, 9 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, brother and extended family.
