Ruben Lira, 67, passed away peacefully on the morning of Thursday, December 8, 2022 in the presence of his loving family at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, Washington.
Born to Reynaldo and Albesa Lira in Edinburg, Texas in 1955, Ruben spent much of his youth in Texas between school and picking cotton with his family. His introduction to the state of Washington as a seasonal migrant field worker later in his youth inspired him to pursue his higher education at Washington State University (WSU) in Pullman, WA where he received his master's degree in education. He worked at the university for several years before becoming a high school counselor in Connell, WA. Ruben was very passionate about working with students and youth of all backgrounds to help recognize their potential, set goals, and achieve success in life.
While studying at WSU, he met the love of his life and best friend, Nancy. They married in 1981 and raised their children in Pullman, WA. Ruben loved spending time with family and friends. He was known for his kindness, his thoughtful nature, and for his good sense of humor. Ruben’s favorite past times were fishing, building radio-controlled airplanes and playing the guitar; yet it was his love for the Lord that gave him his greatest joy. Ruben took every opportunity to spend time with church family and fellow believers.
Ruben will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 41 years, Nancy; children, Robert (Jackie), Michael (Karina), Alicia (David); grandchildren, Vincent and Terrance. He is also survived by brother Reynaldo (Manuelita), sisters Alma, Aida (Jorge), and Adelia, and many other family members and friends.
Ruben was preceded in death by his parents Reynaldo and Albesa; siblings, Anita, Alicia, Adelita, and Roel.
A private graveside service and memorial for family and friends will be held on December 21st in Seattle, Washington.
The family requests donations be made to the University of Washington Medical Center, Heart Institute, in lieu of flowers.
The family extends a very special thank you and their deepest gratitude to the staff at the University of Washington Medical Center for their care and compassion
