Sheldon Yee Wong
December 10, 1931 – April 15, 2024
Sheldon Yee Wong was born in Guangzhou, China on December 10,1931, where he would spend his formative and young adult years. The oldest son to Dong Shee and Hing Wong and older brother to Nancy (Lee).
In 1954, at the age of twenty-three, Sheldon immigrated to the United States. Only months after arriving to the US, he was drafted into the US Army. Sheldon served his new country from 1954 to 1956, spending bootcamp in Texas and then serving the remainder of this service in Anchorage, Alaska. His service exemplified his dedication to duty and his love for his new homeland.
In 1966, at the age of 35, Sheldon traveled to Hong Kong where he would meet his beautiful wife, May. Shortly after May arrived to Seattle, they would move into their house on Beacon Hill. The house became a home as both Sheldon and May spent a blessed 58 years together creating their memories and raising their three children together; Melina, Aldwin and Margaret where he remained until his passing.
Sheldon was one of the original owners of Ying’s Drive-In located on Lake City Way, a place where he introduced and served delicious Chinese food to the community After a few years in the restaurant business Sheldon decided to attend Edison Vocational School on Capitol Hill, which is now Seattle Community College. This would lead to a career at Boeing, as a avionics technician for over three decades until his retirement in 1996.
In retirement Sheldon enjoyed spending more time with the family, family vacations and still leading an active lifestyle. Sheldon was a regular for lap swimming at the Mercer Island Pool several times a week.
Sheldon and May loved to travel near and far. They traveled to China annually, weekend trips to Vancouver, B.C and also enjoyed traveling with friends to many European countries such as Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland along with several different Asian countries. Their Children and Grandchildren brought immense joy. Sheldon enjoyed spending time with family and had active role in caring for his grandchildren, Cameron and Morgan.
Sheldon’s death is preceded by parents (Hing & Dong Shee). Sheldon is survived by his devoted wife, May, his children Melina (Jet Singh), Aldwin and Margaret (Raffi Piliguian) his grandchildren: Cameron, and Morgan, and his sister, Nancy Lee
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2024 at 11:00am at Joyale Seafood Palace (900 S Jackson St. – Seattle)
