Wai Shun "Shirley" Wong

1936 — 2022

Seattle

Shirley Wai Shun Wong passed away on October 10, 2022 with her family at her side, after a brief illness. Our beloved Mother and Poh Poh (grandmother in Chinese) was born in 1936 in Guangzhou, China. She was a stellar student and athlete, excelling in track. She earned a mechanical engineering degree from a top Chinese University, following which she moved to Hong Kong. In the 1960s she joined her husband, Gene Kwok Fun Wong, in Seattle, where they resided together until his passing in 1993.

Shirley was an accomplished career woman who worked as an engineer for decades at the Boeing Company. She loved Boeing and made many friends there. She was proud of her work, and rightfully so because she was recognized for her design improvements to airplane seats. Upon reflection, it is notable that she was a successful professional woman in STEM decades ago. But to her, it was simply who she was. She worked hard for her accomplishments, but they seemed to come naturally, as a result of her brilliant mind that was always full of thoughts and ideas.

Following her retirement from Boeing in the early 2000s, she continued with her active lifestyle. She took up golf and traveled the world, but most of all, she poured her boundless energy into her family. She was always there for her daughters and was a doting Poh Poh. Her greatest joy was to spend time with her family, whether on grand trips to Asia and Europe, weekend golf and dim sum, sharing meals at her house with the beautiful lake view, cheering the grandkids on in sports, or simply being together at home.

She is survived by her loving family, daughters – Lander Chin (Doug) and Lisa Lackland (BJ), grandchildren – Jessica, Kira and Kellan, sister Wai Fun, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be dearly missed by her family as well as her many friends who will remember her for sharp mind, selfless and caring way, bright smile, and outgoing, up-for-anything spirit.

Private family service and burial at Lake View Cemetery the morning of October 20, 2022.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial reception and luncheon at 12pm noon on October 20, 2022, China Harbor Restaurant, 2040 Westlake Ave N on Lake Union in Seattle.

In lieu of flowers, she would be honored by a donation to Kin On Health Care Center, or to a charity that supports youth golf education or women in STEM.
