Walter Wen-Teh Lu, of Bellevue, WA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on January 26, 2026, at the Wockner Hospice Care Center at EvergreenHealth. He was 85 years old.
Walter was born on September 3, 1940, to Qicheng and Lihan Lu in Taipei, Taiwan. He studied mechanical engineering at National Cheng Kung University, graduating in 1962. He went on to obtain a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Cheng Kung University and a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from New York University.
In 1967 Walter met Keiko Obata in New York City. They raised four children; Stephen, Amy, Kimberly and Leonard.
In his early career Walter worked with Control Data Corporation, becoming an early pioneer in the use of computing in engineering applications. In 1980, he joined central engineering at the Boeing Corporation for the 757 project, and moved his family to Washington State. Walter was very proud of the multiple projects he worked on at Boeing until his retirement in 2014.
Walter participated in the Cheng Kung University Alumni Association and Long-long Evergreen Chorus group. He loved music, photography, traveling the world, and spending time with his grandchildren Kayla Zemek, Jackson Zemek, Amaris Gopman Lu, Ezra Gopman Lu, Hiro Mitchell-Lu, and Yamato Mitchell-Lu.
Walter is survived by his wife, Keiko Lu, and his children Stephen Lu, Amy Lu, Kimberly Lu, and Leonard Lu.
A private memorial will take place on February 22. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests supporting the Chinese Information and Service Center (CISC-seattle.org) or Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS.org)
